This is a pack of 4 Alphabet Phonic Racemats that feature both uppercase and lowercase letters. Two of the boards use real letters (one with white letters, the other with gray), the other two use our
FREE LEEP letters.
Game Suggestion 1
1. Before playing I like to warm my students up by using the LEEP Racemat to sing the ABC Song with Alphabet Sounds.
2. Have each player pick a small toy to use as their game piece.
3. Decide if you want to play on the upper or lowercase race track.
4. Tell your students that if you flip a coin and it lands on heads players get move one space. If the coin lands on tails players move two spaces.
5. As a player moves space to space they MUST say each letter's correct phonetic pronunciation followed by its hint word. E.g. C c caterpillar, d d don't.
6. Make sure you are modelling each letter for your students and repeating any pronunciation problems.
7. The first player to make it all the way from A - Z wins.
8. After completing one round, if your students are still engaged, switch which version of the alphabet you are using (e.g. Lowercase to Uppercase) and repeat.
Game Suggestion 2
1. Have you students pick a toy animal to use as their playing pieces.
2. Tell your EFL students that you are the shark. It’s your job to catch the student’s animals. It’s their job to get all the way from A to Z before you can catch them.
3. Pick which Phonetic Alphabet Board you want to use. *This is a great time to add a little extra English by talking about shapes and letters.
4. Let each student roll the die twice so that they can get a bit of a head start before the shark starts hunting.
5. Students have to say the “sound” of each letter as well as the accompanying image as they pass it. E.g. If a student rolls a 3 they have to say the sounds that correspond to the next three spots on the board, e.x. “ah-ah-Apple, b-b-Belly, c-c-Caterpillar.”
6. If you catch one of the students by landing on the same letter they’re on they have to substitute their animal for another shark and join you in your hunt. This ensures they’re still participating and learning. If you don’t have multiple sharks you can tell them that they are a zombie or ghost and let them continue to use the same animal.
7. The race continues until the hunters catch all of the animals or a player reaches Z.
8. Players that reach Z survive.
If the game was too fast race back to A.
To make this game a lot more fun, add these rules.
- Students must reach Z and then return to A (so the race goes A-Z-A).
-When a shark lands on the same space as a player, they play rock, scissors, paper for a chance to dodge the attack.
-Players and sharks can move forwards and backward along the racetrack.
